Loci of 3-periodics in an Elliptic Billiard: Why so many ellipses?

چکیده

A triangle center such as the incenter, barycenter, etc., is specified by a function thrice- and cyclically applied on sidelengths and/or angles. Consider 1d family of 3-periodics in elliptic billiard, loci its centers. Some will sweep ellipses, others higher-degree algebraic curves. We propose two rigorous methods to prove if locus given an ellipse: one based computer algebra, another algebro-geometric method. also that rational sidelengths, algebraic.

Why Ellipses Are Not Elliptic Curves

After circles, ellipses are probably the most familiar curves in all of mathematics. Like circles, they are a special subclass of the so-called conic sections, or curves obtained by slicing a cone with a plane, and their applications are many and varied. For example, thanks to Johannes Kepler and his laws of planetary motion, astronomers know ellipses as the orbits of planets and many comets ab...

Why So Many Nodes?

This paper provides an analysis of the representation of various grammatical phenomena in both constituency structure and dependency structure (hereafter c-structure and d-structure), including agreement, case marking, and word order in transitive sentences, as well as three theoretical constructs, and the interface between the form of a sentence and its meaning. There is a crucial structural r...

So Many Plasminogen Receptors: Why?

Plasminogen and plasmin tether to cell surfaces through ubiquitously expressed and structurally quite dissimilar family of proteins, as well as some nonproteins, that are collectively referred to as plasminogen receptors. Of the more than one dozen plasminogen receptors that have been identified, many have been shown to facilitate plasminogen activation to plasmin and to protect bound plasmin f...

Why so many sperm cells?

A key limiting step in fertility is the search for the oocyte by spermatozoa. Initially, there are tens of millions of sperm cells, but a single one will make it to the oocyte. This may be one of the most severe selection processes designed by evolution, whose role is yet to be understood. Why such a huge redundancy is required and what does that mean for the search process? we discuss here the...
